My lower outdrive is shot found one for sale but is advertised as 3.0L and I have a 2.5L looks the same and is a 400. Anyone tell me if it will fit my upper drive. Mine is a 1984 and the new used on is a mechanical shift just like my fubard one thx
Ok thanks. Tore it apart and the shift dogs are all worn and pump is busted had to use a slide hammer to get it out there was metal all over when I took it apart when in water was almost impossible to get into gear and when I would give some throttle would just pop out of gear that's when I decided to take it apart. Cases are damaged and would cost to much to replace all the parts. So wanna find a lower unit in better shape and rebuild the seals on that one and reinstall on the boat
you may also want to look at the splines between the upper and lower (where the water pump is). the splines are known to fail as well. usually involves new driveshafts
I pretty much know whats wrong with it I need to replace the lower end as a unit the one for sale is 1978 to 1981 mechanical shift mine is 1984 mechanical shift you certin it will fit? Thx
the 1978-1981 are hydro-mechanical shift
the 1982-1985 are mechanical shift.
the cases are so different they do not even mate up. I bought a lower once sight-unseen that was a 1981 and not a 1982. I have pictures of both side by side at home in my archives.
That's why I'm confused, mine looks just like that one. in my pics above I got thoses pics from the ad.and he is advertising it as a 1978-1981 you think maybe he has his years wrong? and this one will work for me?
If those are photos from the seller, and the seller is saying it's a 78-81, then yes - I believe that's the seller is mistaken.
The difference between the two units on the outside is an anode on the outside of the drive over the anti-cavitation plate. I can't see that in the photos, but the what I do see is a mechanical shift rod rack. The cable is different for a hydro-mechanical shift. So the pictures are of a mechanical shift lower.
This is what he told me. Any insight?? Much appreciated......
Hi The one in the pictures is the one im selling the thing is the electric shift would obliviously have two wires coming out and that was made up till 1977 then in 78 they came up with a cable shift so from 78 to 81 then from 82 to 84 they changed the lash up a little bitt so thtas where it gets a little tricky is the 78 to 81 cable shift going to work in your 84? maybe somebody already switched your boat over to the earlier style.if you look at a omc repair book it showes the diffrence on these two cable shift stringers,if yours looks just like the one in my photo i think it should work but make shure because if theres a mistake then we can not afford to ship it back so please do your home work so your not disappointed and get the wrong part,Thanks Dave oh yea i think i might have to modify the auction to ship to canada and i cant remember if i said 125.00 or 135.00 for shipping
Roll with what Scott's showing you: OMC made the Stringer from '62 until '86. 1962 - 1977 were electric shift models (definitely not what's in the pictures). 1978-1981 were hydro-mechanical shift. They have the cable like you see in Scott's photo on the right. 1981-1985/6 the Stringer was full mechanical shift using the shift rod - that's the unit on the left in Scott's photo and also the one in the photo's you posted.
Seller's got his history pretty right, but that's a shift rod I'm seeing in the photo not a shift cable. (Up to a little while ago, I would not have been able to tell you the difference between 'em - so being confused about Stringers isn't hard to pull off )
My boat is an omc 800. It's a 79 and should have hydromechanical shift. somewhere along the line it was converted to mechanical. Only after some time did I figure this out and learn the difference as you are now.
My experience is not helping you but maybe my spare parts bin can!
