Hi all. I need to know what years lower units will fit a 1996 Evinrude 225 ? Will a 150 fit a 225 etc.. In your opinion which is the strongest that will fit. I have what is believed to be an 86 and another believed to be a 76 model. Looks like the same bolt-up? Thanks for the help in advance!

V-6 units will interchange from 1976-2002. The only differences are:

Early style housing had 4 bolts to hold carrier in place retained by snap rings.
Later model uses 2 bolts and tabs.
89-95 use a smaller propshaft ( 1.187)
96 and up use a 1.250 propshaft so reverse gear is different.
Drive shaft lengths are different because of crankshafts lengths
Early units use 1 piece driveshafts as newer use 2 piece shafts
The best for the buck if your not running a chopper is the 89 and up units. if running a sufacing prop swap guts to the magnum housing (beefier)

Thanks for the reply!!! That is good news! Now for my next question....Can I replace the old 1 piece shaft with my 2 piece so it will fit my crankshaft length? BTW...What is this Magnum housing you speak of? Thanks, Keith

Re: OMC Knowledge needed

You started seeing this housing in 01 and up engines. It will backdate to early models.
