I recently acquired a 28 horse johnson-rude (i have yet to take delivery of the motor) sans tiller.

Where is the cheapest place to get a tiller handle for this ol' girl. I am guestimating it's a 70's era. When i do pick up the motor i will have the specific motor we need.

Looking at the parts breakdowns for the 28 hp johnnyrudes, I see they were made starting in the 1980s. I could not find any models that were equipped with tiller handles. This may make your job a lot, lot harder.

Re: obsolete parts

I can just remember far enough back to a friend whose family had a Johnson 28 HP in the early 60s. It had a tiller.
Could be that old.

Others will weigh in....

The one off an 18HP might work, the have same pinion gear. The tiller pivot on the 28 is only one sided. I don't think they made one for the 28.

Re: obsolete parts

I am assuming that you have the early sixties 28.

The old 1962-64 28s had more in common with the 33s of 1965-70 but with a smaller powerhead like the early 25/30 through 1956. I believe Gale (and therefore Sea King & Viking) kept on producing the 25 horse through 1963 (Johnson & Evinrude began selling them as 28 horse motors in 1962).

The tiller handle from a 1965-70 33-horse or a 40-horse 1971-76 (heck, through 1983 if you are talking about the commercial 40) would fit. OMC sold the tiller handle kit for the above listed motors for many years. Shown below is a composite picture I made from the 1974 OMC Accesories brochure so it therefore only lists it as fitting through 1974.

BTW, if your motor is in fact an early sixties 28, be sure to run a 24:1 gas / oil mix.
