new trim limit & sender switches installed, do i test with lower on or off

I just installed new sierra trim switches and just want to know if i need to reinstall the lower unit first to test and adjust or can i do it with the unit off? Which is most common or the correct way?

The outdrive and trim rams need to be installed to correctly set the trim ram limit length. You probably do not want to run the trim motor without the rams attached, as they may fully extend and you might have trouble getting them to retract.

thank you very much for the quick reply. I had assumed so, but the instructions didn't say anything to the effect, so just double checking to ensure proper technique.
