New recoil spring

I need a new recoil spring for my 50hp mercury. Is it better to buy just a new spring or the whole unit? How much should the whole unit cost. I have seen them at a lot of different prices.

What year is the motor? There are several outboard salvage dealers that are listed on Iboats in the Johnson motor section Sticky that you can buy used parts from. Replacing the spring can be a SOB if one has never done it before.
