What is the boat, how will it be used? Generally you will not get told to go to a smaller displacement engine around here! In most cases the larger engine, used prudently, will give the same economy. And when needed it has more oomph.
I'm a a good example, 19' 6" boat with a 5.7 Chevy. I run all over in it, when my kids want to ski no problem. When dad wants wind in his hair, no problem. When the community swim raft needs to get towed off the beach, still no problem. Stay with the 351. Plus the brackets, manifolds and accessories are going to fit.

Re: new engine

if you have a 302, you would probably want to stay with it unless you want to buy more parts. Fords were not like GM with the interchangeability like the 305/350 GM has.

If the marine followed the automobile any then your 302 should have a firing order of; 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8, while the 351 is; 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8
