The manufacturer of the Breezeworks alternator kits contacted all three of his alternator suppliers. Here's his quote:

"I have consulted with my all three of my current alternator suppliers
who have confirmed that the typical automotive application of this style
alternator would use run off voltage after passing through an indicator
light and can operate on as little as a 1/2 volt without any change in
performance. If you find conflicting information to this I would like
to hear more about it."

So, I guess it's not settled...

Whatever. With a battery that measures 12.5 volts, I measure 14.5 volts on the alternator primary wire with the engine running. I've got 12 volts (purple wire) going to the black excite wire. I think I'm good to go. :)
