1995 305 5.0L V8 Mercruiser.
I recently removed my port side riser and manifold and found that they need replacing. The gaskets seem to have been leaking although the insides of both don't seem that bad. The tail end of the riser (see picture) is definitely shot though. I am unsure of their age, so replacing the manifold and riser for both sides seems prudent.
My questions: I think I have the old style flapper. Can anyone confirm this? Since I have the exhaust off, should I change this part as well as preventive maintenance? It looks as if the flapper doesn't seal tightly in the exhaust pipe.
Also, there was some rust/debris in the top of the exhaust pipe from the corroded riser. Chances are, there's more in the lower end (gravity!). The manual shows that the exhaust pipe is a 2-piecer with bolts and lock washers at the lower end. How difficult would it to separate the 2 parts of the pipe and get any debris out?
Also, the exhaust ports on my engine look sooty (see picture). Is this normal? The insides of the manifolds look sooty as well.
Thanks all, this site is invaluable!
