Check spark on all four,
then undo the distributor lugs of and have a look at that,
l have a 1979 70 hp that we fitted a new MSD cd unit to back in feb,
used it a dozen or so times until winter and life got in the way,
would still start it in the yard when able,

Started at home 10 days ago prior to going down to the boat ramp 500yds away,
idled fine for 5 mins at the ramp,
then started to miss and run rough....had a large sneeze then stalled...wouldn't start after that,

took it home...no spark
checked wiring ok
undid dizzy ( preamp type ) rotor came out easily, almost fell out,

Looks like preamp or rotor is the cause, not sure if we will continue with this motor

Very interesting read and videos
and the connection to Frank A

Thank you for the response. Truthfully I am just about had it with this motor myself. I need to keep it running until I can afford a replacement. Been nothing but a nerve wracking money pit so far. But I only paid $500 for it a year ago and it gets me out on the water. Albeit the smoke and stink and oily mess all over the back of the boat. And NOISY.

I paid $200 aud for mine,
needed a cheapie to put on a 15ft runabout to get out to a moored boat around 15 k's round trip away

need to move it closer SOON when our own mooring is laid

don't use the runabout for much else these days,
too small for these coastal waters imho,

no freshwater lakes nearby either

not real keen on fitting 40 yr or so old 2nd hand parts to an equally old motor

at the same time not keen on putting a 5 to 10k motor on a $500 hull ( had it 12 yrs though )
bit of a quandry lol

Look around for a newer used motor.
Paid 125$ s for a 1988/125 that needed a flywheel key.
But it sounds like AU. is a very expensive place to do anything!!

Jerry, yeh l think that is what we'll do,
get a " new" not so old donk,

something that won't cack itself constantly in the 90 sec run ( once out of the 5 knot zone ) out to the new mooring once it's sorted,

truth is, l shouldn't have given up the marina berth for the big boat once we retired 2 yrs ago,

It's just a block away...me and muttley walk down every week and glare at the Arvor in " our " spot lol
Anyway...
Naturally the "white fridge/anchor" expired a week after my son sold his trailer boat,

now l have to work on his brothers 115 yammie so l can get out to it...

Such is life.... as reportedly said by Ned the dead on the gallows at his own necktie " party "
