I have a 1987 Evinrude 200 hp on a 1988 21' Chris Craft Sea Hawk 215. I understand this is a heavy boat at 2500 lbs, plus another 500 lbs for 80 gals of fuel plus gear and the number of people (2 or 3). So I'm thinking 3500 -3700 lbs.
When I open the throttle in full position, the boat seems like its not getting to full speed. It just seems like this 200 should push this boat a lot faster then what it does. The motor sounds like it's at maximum out-put but just doesn't feel like I'm moving the way it should for a 200 hp. Again, I understand that this is a heavy boat (I think I understand - I am new to boating this year and am trying to learn all I can) but something doesn't seem right.
I know I have 2 small issues which I need to correct - 1 is changing the prop. I have a 19" and I was told I need a 17". The 2nd is the trim tab on one side is slightly lower than the other side and needs to be adjusted . I can't adjust the trim tab or change the prop until I get the boat out of the water. It's docked in my yard. 1st question, will the 2 above items make that big of a difference in motor performance, speed and/or drag??? Also, when the throttle is open in full position, I can wiggle the cables and sort of feel the boat/motor pick up a little extra speed. So next question, is there a possibility that there is an issue with the cables not being connected/attached correctly??? Can this be something electrical??? I know I'm going to get posts that it can be a thousand diffident things and there isn't enough information to determine the issue - it can be from the motor, to the cables to the electrical or something else - I just wanted to see if there was a few easy tests or things I can check before I take it to the marina. Again, being new to boating - I'm trying to learn. I posted a question a few weeks back about water coming into my cabin and I received many posts and figured out what the issue was and it was an easy fix. It took 10 minutes and probably saved me a couple of hundred dollars by not going to the marina.
I want to thank all those posters yet once again for helping me with that issue.
Thanks in advance.
