My new old boat

So here's what I got. 1986 Johnson 35 hp. New spark plugs, coils, altanator, and rebuild carb. It fires up instantly. But the sputters and spits. Blows a plume of smoke out the exhaust when it acts like it backfires and then dies. It has a single carb and I have fooled with the carb adjust screw so much I don't know where it goes. Ps I just got this boat today

Did you hear it run, before you got it?

It sounds like you have a weak fuel pump.

We had it running but not well. Today: I dumped the old gas and put new in. 49:1 clean off spark plugs, top was wet bottom was dry and black. After running it for a little while I was able to get it to idle for about 2 minutes. I once was able to give it gas and it purred like a kitten but then died. It sneezes a little every once in awhile. I backed the needle valve out 1 1/4 turns like I have read. I'm thinking gunked up carb. I think I'm gounna take it to the local boat guy for repair. His rate is 75 an hour does that seem reasonable?
