I have a 97' larson flyer with a matching Johnson 90hp V4 that I had just purchased used and the trim wont stay where I put it. It constantly bleeds down (not fast) including when in water at speeds. Is this just a matter of filling up the fluid? Also my speedometer doesnt work but I dont care how fast Im going as long as I am hitting the RPM bands I think I'm doing fine.

Any help is very appreciated. Thank You.

Jay.

Re: My Johnson wont stay upright.

Model number should be on the LH side of the upper leg while standing at the prop.

It's possible you have a tilt only model ( I have this) It will not hold the motor up / out while under load. My switch says power tilt.

Do yourself a favor and get a manual for your outboard. You will learn a lot.

You could try viagra.. lol
On the right side of the tilt &trim as you stand at the prop there is a manual release that you can loosen a little to allow the unit to drop make sure its closed, on mine its a large flathead screw.

It doesn't hurt to check your fluid level. It needs to be done when it is out of the water. Just make sure the manual tilt/trim release screw is tightened after you are done. The fill screw is a separate screw.

Ok so the Model number is BJ90SLEDR I removed the cowl and found date of build which is 02/02/96. I was looking at the trim motor, and have seen several on here and it looks different. I dont know where the fill plug is but I have ordered the manual this morning to help me along. Pictures though work wonders for me.

I do thank you guys for the information as the only other boat I have dealt with before was a 12.5' aluminum with a 15hp on it.

Re: My Johnson wont stay upright.

That motor looks to have a standard Fastrack PTT unit on it. Make sure the manual release is tight. It should be a large screw on the port side of the PTT unit.

The resevoir has a plastic cap with a screwdriver slot, on the starboard side. Tilt the motor all the way up, lock it up with the rotating tilt lock (port side tilt tube) and wait a few minutes for any air to bubble out. Now fill the resevoir (boat level) with Dextron Auto trans fluid, until it overflows. Cap it and cycle down and up. Repeat until no more air emerges from the PTT resevoir.

Re: My Johnson wont stay upright.

I dont know if this is relevant.
I have a manual tilt 'n' trim. I had problems back last year.

I found the lift stud had gotten ****ed up. so wd40 and a diving knife to move the stud up and down a little sorted the problem out.

the stud is found at the bottom of the tilt cable on the piston.
Its dark now so i'll take photos tomorrow and post them

as I said I dont know how relevant this is to power t'n't.
