It runs fine in neutral but wont forward nor reverse. Is my shifter cable broken, is this a major problem???Pls help!!!! My motor is 2.3 Volvo inboard. Thanks!

Not a major problem if your your tied off! Shift cables aren't too bad, drive gear repalcement is pretty major.
I'm not volva penta experienced but the more info you can provide the better we can respond.
Just saying it won't go forward or reverse is kinda vaugue.

What is the model number? Perhaps an AQ125 A or B or ________ fill in the blank. Volvo didn't 2.3L on anythiing.
Also, what drive? 270, 275, 280, 285?
If you don't find any numbers, pictures are worth a thousand words.

A few things to check to start with.
Check the gear lube, is it full? Is it milky white or gray?
Remove the back cover and see if the shift mechanism is actually moving all the way into forward or reverse with the shifter.
Check by putting it in forward (Engine NOT running) then see if the shift mechanism moves anymore if you turn it by hand.
