Hi Guys,

I have a 1977 Evinrude, SN #75743S. Runs great since rebuild. I have a jack plate attached as the tilt. Problem is I am getting engine movement. I talked to the parts dept at the local Marine shop and they said I need to replace the motor mount. Could someone please tell me where it is and how to replace it. During an earlier outing I broke a bolt that was seized. This may also happen, so how do I prevent breaking a bolt while trying to fix the mount.

Thanks

Im not sure I understand what you or they are referring to as motor mount.

Nor, what you mean by engine movement.

Do you mean the whole motor, is moving around on back of boat?

Or do you mean powerhead , has lateral movement , meaning inside cowling ?

I may just be tired , but I can't figure out what your referring to.

As far as getting seized bolts loose, try soaking with PB Blaster.

You can get it at most auto parts stores.

And tapping bolt head , as you try to remove it.

Avoid getting it on painted surfaces , as much as possible.

With the motor in hte vertical position I can lift move the engine back and forth by lifting up on the lower unit. Even as I am running on the water the engine appears to be tilted to one side. Doesn't seem normal/

A lot of the questions could be answered more specifically if we knew what size the motor is. On some motors you're describing a bad or worn upper mount. On some you're describing a loose nut on the steering post on the swivel housing. And that is mis-diagnosed 99% of the time as a loose / bad upper mount.

Its a 1977, 75 hp, If it is the upper mount, how hard is it to replace it?

If the upper m/mount is faulty, you'll need to remove the powerhead to gain access to the retaining bolts.

However..... If what you're saying is that you can grab the engine and shake it violently from side to side without moving the steering arm, that is usually caused by worn splines of the steering arm at the bottom m/mount area.

Hopefully your problem is the upper mount..... the easier of the two repairs.
