Mercury Tilt & Trim Piston Lubrication

I have a 1977 Mercury 115 hp o/b... I'm new to the whole boating experience, but restore cars professionally, so I'm not mechanically ignorant...lol I've noticed that there are grease nipples on the tops of the tilt and trim pistons... What type of lube do you use to fill these pistons (standard automotive lube, etc.), and do you have to fill them with the motor up/down or does it not matter? Thanks in advance guys, you ROCK...

The grease nipples near the power trim are for 1) the tilt lever and 2) the swivel tube. You fill them with Quicksilver 2-4 w/ Teflon in a grease gour un. This doesn't enter the power trim assembly. That is filled with the motor tilted all the way up, and filled with Quicksilver Power trim/tilt fluid or possibly ATF, depending on your unit.

Turbo, My '77 Merc 1500 PTT pump called for 5W-30 motor oil.

I use marine grease in a gun for all grease fittings. It is salt water resistant. Do not forget the one on the swivel bracket, since they can corrode and make steering difficult/impossible.
