To drain:

Open the drain plug first, then open the upper vent plug.

Inpsect drain plug for signs of metallic debris.

Inspect oil for signs of moisture of contaminants.

To fill:

Use premium gear lubricant. Replace the plug gasket or seal with a new one. It is an often overlooked leak path.

Fill the gear case from the bottom drain plug, slowly until you see the oil ooze out the vent hole above.

Install the vent plug, and tighten. This will slow the oil leak rate when you remove the fill tube.

Remove the fill tube and quickly install the drain screw, without losing too much oil. Tighten drain screw.

p.s. One way to remove the stuck vent screw is to use a hammer-impact type slotted screwdriver.
