MerCrusier 120 Starter Info wanted

Being that this engine is a 2.5L GM, can i use a starter off of a car or truck? I'm not buying a new one cause the boat is gutted. If i get it running, I might fix it up or sell the sterndrive. there is a junk yard close and I don,t have a starter on it.

Short answer: yes you can.

Long answer: no (fuel vapor igniting, safety, not uscg approved marine equipment, and so on.)

on-road starters are not marine approved because they are not spark arresting. long story short, they cause explosions
