That's not an engine serial number, it's the drive serial number. And it's from a 1993, 1.84:1 Alpha One drive....

0D780403 Comes up as an MERCRUISER STANDARD ROTATION ALPHA 1.84:1 stern drive. MERCRUISER - (ALPHA H.P. (1993) Serial No: 0D780403 Model No: 5010184FS Parts Catalog No: 90-81818391

Do you believe the engine to be original as well? The engine serial number should be found on a metal tag just above thee engine starter. You should be able to narrow down your parts search by going through this. http://www.mercruiserparts.com/selec...asp?type_id=V6

thanks guys- i had written the serial down but had also forgot to take the paper i wrote it on with me- guess my memory's not so good- it's for sure close to that though- metal tag above starter- hard to see. So i assume its very possible that a boat made in 1996 would have a powerplant made in 1993. is that the case? i'll get the serial number next time i'm out but i was hoping to go out with the oil pressure switch when i go

all the serial numbers you have posted in this thread are for either drives or the transom assy, there are no engine serial numbers as of yet

have you looked at the tag above the starter?? yep, sometimes they are hard to read but it may be the only tag left for you to see

the tag above the starter is where i got the 1st number but i did forget to bring the paper i wrote it down on, so i was going from memory but obviously messed it up. i'll update with a valid serial number just for giggles but i seem to have all the info i need in any case- oil pressure switch and filter are in stock at local merc distributor, will handle all that and get serial tomorrow
