mercruiser 165 hp charging problem

I have 87 mercruiser 165 hp inboard /out board engine.I'm having a problem that the batteries are not charging it has a strator on it and regulator how do i test which one is bad ,the battiers are only 2yr old. The volt meter says it's charging but battieres arn't charging. Before i purchase a new battery is there a way to test it.

My first post here. I've got the exact same problem. However, I did waste $70 on a new battery.

Judging from the number of replies to your thread, looks like we're on our own.

i have a simaler problem with my 165 i think my stator has a dead short i have disconected my stator and am going to start the boat then check the power output of stator but first i am going to get a wire tester conect to groud and test wire on stator to see if there is a short i was wondering if this is simaler to what you came up with and if not what did you do
