Merc Lower Unit Problem

Pulled off the lower unit on my 2003 fuel injected merc 200 Saltwater. Replaced water pump impeller with no drama. Attempted to reinstall lower unit and no go. Thought I might not have the splines lined up correctly, so did the old spin the driveshaft while pushing up on lower unit and still no go. Not a water tube problem either. Pulled out the flashlight and took a look up into the driveshaft hole and identified the problem. I have a metal ring of some sort that has prob come out of place and is now blocking the driveshaft from seating properly. The ring appears to be the same circumference as the driveshaft. I can move the ring around with a straightened coat hanger but can't pull it out. Dose anyone know what I'm talking about or have a solution to this problem? Thanks

Re: Merc Lower Unit Problem

I hade the same problem I just used hanger to move back into right spot. With the motor tilted down and the grease on it held it in place. As for what it is I dont know. Good luck
