I'm only a few months from the big one and it seems that every day my mail is loaded with tons of supplemental insurance offers. There must be a lot of money in it for the underwriters because of the quality, to say nothing of the quantity of literature. I know there are a few of you out there that have run this gauntlet. How can I find out where I can get the most bang for the buck from somewhere that has no stake in it?

Find an independent agent. Go over with him/her the features of the various plans established by Medicare; select which plan you want (I started out on plan F but later switched to plan J).

Get recommendations from you primary care MD, not a sales person (rep), on what companies they trust most.

Be careful if you plan on travelling. Most of the plans are state or local oriented.
