I am trying to remove the lower unit on a 1996 Johnson 200 hp Venom
outboard motor. I have it in neutral, have removed the 4 bolts (2 each
side) and both bolts in rear. It dropped down about 1 inch , but now
I can't get it to come down anymore. It has been in storage for 5 years
but only has 150 total hours on the motor. I am concerned on how hard
to pry on it to get it loose. Any suggestions??

I didn't. Where do I disconect it at???

There should be a pin you pull under the bottom carb. The shift lever moves to the drives side that releases the shaft to the lower unit. It took me a bit to figure out out. You will see the pin that you pull. Look under the bottom left carb facing the engine.

Good Luck

Its a pain to figure out but when you do you will smack your forehead.

Its under the carb, you pull the pin out and push the shift lever in, not out like I was trying for an hour. soon as you push it in it will release. It helps if you can get your head in there to see how the mechanism works, cause it will help you when its time to get it back in .

It really helps to have two people.

Re: Lower unit removal

Well after a little head bumping I foung it . It is a 3/8th hex bolt , under
the bottom carb on the port side of the boat, It threads into a housing
attached to the shifter arm (from the control) and when it is removed
the whole thing just came out. New water pump in, cleaned everthing
and now back installed. Thanks for your help.
