Lower Unit Rapping Noise Only at Idle

I have a 2001 60 HP Merc 4-stroke.
Put a new gear shift control on the other day, fired it up out the water with ears on to make sure the gear shift was installed correctly.
Put it in gear at idle and a fairly load rapping noise is coming from the lower unit.
The noise is not rhythmical with the rotation of the drive shaft but almost seems to be caused by vibration at the low rpm idle.
Increase rpm to about 1200-1400 and noise goes away.
Ran engine in a garbage can full of water, no noise at all when in gear at any RPM.
Drained lower unit, oil looked good.
Any ideas what could be causing this? Hate to tear the whole thing apart and not see anything.
Any suggestions appreciated.

I think that noise you are hearing is normal. I can always hear that when decelerating. I don't think it is advisable to have it in gear out of the water, though.
