Lower unit lube- 165 hp mercruiser

How should I go about checking lower unit lube level? I've read that there is an upper and lower section, and the lower section will stay full as long as the upper section level is maintained.

What say you?

Ayuh,.... While the outdrive consists of a lower unit, 'n upper unit, they're filled with oil as one unit,...

There's an oil passage 'tween 'em, where the little quad-ring goes,...

Ya fill from the bottom plug, til the oil runs outa the upper plug,.....

Almost right,, the very old units had separate upper and lower compartments
