I lost a bearing and the thread was damaged to the point where a new nut would not screw on. Do I have to replace the axle or is there another alternative?

The proper size die will clean up the threads.

Another option is a thread file. I have a set at work, they're basically pieces of square stock about 1/2" square and 12" or so long. On either end they're cut with different thread pitches. All you have to do is match the proper thread pitch and use them like you would any other file, just be careful to make sure you follow the angle of the threads and don't cut too much. Most of the time it only takes a few passes to get them clean. You can probably find them at any Sears.

depending how buggered the threads are will determine your course of action. if you can get a thread file to work, then your set. however if its really bad, you can have a new spindle welded to the axle, or replace the whole axle.
