I recently picked up a 2000 40hp 3cyl and after tearing it down I found the lack of compression in the mid cyl wasn't just a bad ring but was because of a cracked water jacket. Unfortunatly I had already purchased a major rebuild kit. I prefer not having to buy a new one.
