Jumping Solenoid with starter button..Key on or off ???

Starting/cranking motor with home made starter button to solenoid.Did this last year but cant remember if ignition key needs to be in ON or OFF position.
Also im sure its (Pos red to little red/yellow)to start.Correct me if im wrong.

If you're trying to start the motor, turn the key on. For compression tests, key off. Jump between the large red wire on solenoid to the smaller one NOT connected to ground. I'm not sure of your color codes.

Your wiring color scheme is correct for my boat. It's a '97 5.7L Mercuriser.
Key on if you want it to start.
