Hi, I was looking around and found this yesterday.

Has anyone seen this before? Does anyone know where it came from? According to this, the QD series Johnson outboards (and apparently quite a few others) have been approved be run on a 50:1 mix. I asked the guy who posted it where he got it from, but I haven't heard back yet. I'd like to run the 50:1 if this is accurate. Less oil dumped into the water is always a good thing. I'm not trying to ruffle feathers, or stir up a big controversy, just wondering if anyone knows about this chart?

Not seen that one before

There is guidance on the Evinrude website. See http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/Owners-Center/FAQ/OilAndFuel

Note the new URL for this info folks ... only just found it again.

Those with intimate knowledge of the motors often recommend using 24:1 for motors later than 1964 that do not have needle bearings throughout.

I think all the QD series have needle bearings so it may be acceptable to run them on 50:1 but check

generally stick with the latest recommendations from BRP/Evinrude.

That is a 37 year old chart, very out of date, has some mistakes that were corrected in later years, and should not be used as a reference.

Re: Johnson ounboard lubricant chart

Oiling an outboard is a lot like watering a horse. There is no problem if you give her more than she needs but if you give her less than she needs you will be out one horse. . .or outboard.

People have been getting away with. . .and bragging about. . . running pre-1964 JohnnyRudes on 50:1 for some time. When the engines croak we don't hear from them anymore.

If I had one of those wonderful QDs there is no way I would use less oil than 24:1 unless the source of the 50:1 recommendation warranteed their advice.
