Interchange 2 Barrel Carbs?

I've been thinking of picking up a used carb or two for parts or to try running. My 1974 Merc 140 (s/n 388xxxx) carburetor tag says Mercury Marine 1351-5203A1. I see used carbs with part numbers like 864940, 214715, 866141001 or 34-6118. Is there a compatibility chart somewhere that I can consult to see what carbs would or wouldn't work? Thanks.

You are not going to find a compatability chart. At best you will be able to look up what part numbers were offered with what engine.
Before you say "that's what I was asking", understand this, just because two different carbs were offered, doesn't mean they are interchangeable. The intake manifolds are likely different.
If you are okay with changing ( or adapting, in some cases) the intake manifold, then you can put whatever carb you want. Just keep in mind that there is a difference between a marine carb and an automotive carb.

Thanks for the answer. I think it answers my question. I was lookng at picking up one or two used Mercruiser 140 (or 3.0L) 2-barrel carbs, mostly for spare parts. I've had some problems with my choke (details in another thread on this forum) and thought it would be nice to be able to swap a part or two. But it sounds like I would need to match the exact carburator number, in my case 1351-5203A1.

How did it go man.

I'm showing many possibilities for mine. 1351-5203A1 (Mercarb ?) was the original, the replacement is 1347-818620 1, the manufacturer carb 7043184 (Rochester ?), Sierras replacement 18-7608 or Mallory 9-34001

I'd like to stick to the Mercarb or Rochester rebuild if there is one out there that will line up with my linkages, etc.

I'm in the same boat as you. 140 1974-1978 L4 3771645-5157668 serial number range.
