Inboards With V-drive

The last inboard boat I've owned was 30 years ago. It was a 30 foot wooden Pembroke with a 318 Crysler engine. It had a straight shaft from the back of the engine. Now they have V-Drives. Can I get some comments, and experiences that boaters have had on these V-Drive systems. I am thinking of buying a 1989, 32 foot, Wellcraft, St. Tropaz. It has twin 283 Mercruser engines with the V-drive system. How will these drives hold up if I hit an underwater obstruction, (damage control) and is there any more preventative maintainence that you have to do on these drives? Thanks

You might want to find out what engines are actually in that boat, Merc hasn't used a 283 in anything since 1964.
