Ignition Timing 3.0L Merc

The manual that came with my 2001 MerCruiser 3.0 states to disconect shift switch and while engine is running, place jumper between 2 white wires n dist. and set timing to 2 Deg. ATDC at 700 RPM. MerCruisers service manual #14 states to set timing at 1 deg. BTDC with all else being the same.

Question is, which one is correct? Not many engines have spark ignition ATDC and seems kind of strange to me. With the conditions above, the timing is sitting at 2 BTDC which is the service manual setting.

Can anyone tell me what this should really be?

The latest service bulletin from Mercury staes 2 degrees after top dead center

What is your engine SN, Merc doesn't list anything by year.

PS, manual 14 is for the outdrives, not engines. If you meant 13 with is for a 3.0L engine, that is for 90 to 97 engines. You need manual #26

Sorry I have could not get back sooner but you are correct, I am using #13 and my engine is a 2001 model. I guess I need to find #26. I don't have the SN handy at this time but I will post it later if it will help.

Don S...can't say how much I appreciate your help but maybe you can help me just a little more. Since your chart shows all SN's starting with 0L and mine is 0M045725 and M is after L, would I be right in assuming mine would fall into the 0L341000 and above catagory? or is there another catagory for the 0M series engines.

With your SN, you should be at 2? ATDC.
