Hi guys,

I am looking to buy a new boat and what I am looking for is a SmokerCraft Milentia 172. The dealer is offering me 2 choices of engine the 115 - 4 strokes Mercury or the Yamaha 115 - 4 strokes.

Which one would you take ? And why ? reliability - fuel consumption - or performance ....

Thanks 1

I think these two engines are equal, while Yamaha supplies Merc with power heads for the 4 stroke power range from 40 PS up to 250 PS(Verado series is excluded).

Both fine motors;but I would go with an Evinrude Etec.

E-Tec definately, no doubt, no question.

Just for kicks ask the dealer what a 100 and a 500 hour service costs for the 4 stroke.

I too would vote an E-Tec- but since that wasn't an option, I vote the Yamaha.

Well thanks again folks,

I am also looking for the E-Tec, the only thing which I am scare about is the use of oil. Anyone could tell me what is the cost or usage of oil for an E-Tec let say for around 70 hours of boating / fishing. This oil is not cheap !!!

Speaking of "not cheap" what's the cost of a 100 and 500 hour service on the 4 stroke? You'll find the E-Tec uses so little oil that you'll think it's not working.

But if you're worried about oil, keep in mind it's not unusual for a 4 stroke to make oil.

I have an etec 90, they come froom the factory set up for normal tcw-3 oil. You have to get to dealer to reprogram the engine if you want to use the expensive XD100 synthetic. I left mine set up for commonly avaialble oil since xd100 is hard to find here. I'm still in the break-in period (double oil use) and my usage for 2-3 hrs was maybe 1/2 cup of oil max.

You would probably be happy with any of them. Does the dealer service both motors? Are there many other service centers nearby? Finding service you can trust would be important in making the final choice.

Many thanks all !

Hi RCS - no, I could buy the same model of boat from 2 different dealers - one is selling Merc and the other Yam, and the 2 are well known to be good service place.

Re: If you had the choice, what engine ?

Comparing the two engines you mention, Yamaha DOES NOT make the powerhead any longer for the 4-stroke Merc 115efi, the Merc is all Merc.

That said, the F115 Yamaha is proven where this new all-Merc 115 is brand new. I like both makes but if it were me, the scales are tipped slightly in favor of Yamaha.

What's the price difference? That would be a factor I would consider as well.
