Re: hydro trim

If you are getting power to the relay when you try to trim then it does sound like you have a bad relay.

Try swapping the relays and see what happens.

Re: hydro trim

A wiser method is use a voltmeter (multimeter) to check it out before replacing parts. Are you getting a voltage to the relay from the trim switch? Can you detect a click from the relay when you operate the trim switch?

Re: hydro trim

if you have a little box into which the relays, a fuse, and a bunch of screwpost terminals are crammed ... then it is also very likely to be a bad connection. the box is a nice moisture collection device and leads to a lot of problems.

check the fat red wire for 12v.
the switch activates the relay but it is separate from the actual motor power.
the switch is a low amp circuit that can be fed through a fuse box.
the trim motor is a high amp circuit that needs to be drawn off starter or battery post.

same with fat black wire.

Re: hydro trim

check the fat black wire for solid ground.

check terminal #87 for +12vdc at all times
check terminal #87a for ground at all times
check terminal #86 for ground

operate switch and check terminal #85 for 12vdc.
operate switch and check terminal #30 for 12vdc
let go of switch and check terminal #30 for ground

do for both relays

oughta work. if not hot wire motor and makes sure it even works.

Re: hydro trim

When I hot wire it at the relay connector under the hood it works.but not at the switch.so it seems power goes in to the relay but not back out to the trim toggle .oh if u eve jump at the relay don't do the wrong one.it burns deep instantly. lol found out the hard way.

Re: hydro trim

mercury/mariner/force is the gold standard of trim wiring. It is also the defacto standard that everybody else from omc to volvo copied. you can buy used off ebay for under $30. make sure to install an inline fuse or circuit breaker between battery (starter post) and relay.
