Re: hull extension in progress with picks

after i did the entire side with 1000 grit....it was time to do somthing i didnt want to do.......i had to aceitont the wax off the other side......

...........im kinda confused here.....i talked to the rep about it...(the wax on top of the gell...) and he said it was unwaxed.....if the gellcoat was waxed...it would have sealed and become hard....and easilly sanded......however....im sure the stuff im cleaning off is wax....?.....so i dont know what it is....if the rep is wrong about what he sold "him" or if the rep is right and im taking the styrene off the gellcoat??????

any hoo..........i had to scrub the entire other side with aceitone.....3 gallons worth.......when i did......i spilled some aceitone over the keel....well.....im kinda anal....so i had to run over and wipe the aceitone off the area i just sanded with 1000 grit....... this is what i saw....

after i cleaned the area....it really shined......this is another pic of the area....

gellcoatingset5015.jpg

so.......after three gallons of scrubbing the other side....i cleaned the first side with aceitone

this is the side with 1000 grit and no polish

gellcoatingset5016.jpg

the whole hull gleamed

gellcoatingset5017.jpg

you can still see minor surface scratches in the gell but its really shiney

gellcoatingset5018.jpg

well..... i got a glimmer of hope then.....and really went for the other side....it took a long time to take the wax off the other side....but finally it was ready for sanding.....i started with 400 grit (if i didnt clean it with aceitone,,,,,the sand paper would gum up in a second or two of sanding......with the wax gone.....the 400 really chewed the oarange peel

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

I cut discs out of wet and dry paper and glue them onto my orbital sander with 3M Feathering Disc Adhesive. Then I have a pint squeese bottle with a tiny little hole in the tip that I use to keep the area wet with a soap and water solution.

It does sling a little stuff around but sure cuts the time on the job.

Besides all that, oops was using wet and dry to sand by hand. He showed a picture of it back aways.

OOHH yea i seen that , thanks WiseOne !! John

Re: hull extension in progress with picks

ok....its back.......when i was using the 400 to cut down the orange peel.....i found there was still some waxy areas....it gummed the paper quick !
but i still cut it down lots

gellcoatingset5020.jpg

after the 400....i went to 600 grit

gellcoatingset5021.jpg

then to 800 grit...

gellcoatingset5022.jpg

thats when that jerk murphy showed up.....i wanted to get 1000 grit done on both sides....but when i was going over it with 800 i found....(felt) a few spots of orange peel.....the light is so bad in the shop at night....i couldnt see the areas id missed with the first pass.....i had toatlly used up all my 400 grit paper......so i went back over the side....(gunwhale) with 600.....but it was taking forever to cut the few spots of orange peel....so i did what anyone would do at 130 in the morning.....

i called it a night......

gellcoatingset5023.jpg

that was supposed to be the end of the update.......but i just couldnt help this......after i left the shop....i went to 7-11 for some sandwiches.....the people there kinda looked horrified at me.......i couldnt figgure what was going on.........then i got home and went to shower......

gellcoatingset5024.jpg

ya.......a real lady killer !

cheers

You need a decontamination chamber at the entrance to that garage.

i scuffed mrs oops with 1500 today.....she said ...."thats soft!

Oops you may have stumbled on a gold mine here! Maybe you could start up a new kind of spa treatment with that orbital sander of yours! ;)

(After the boat is done of course!) :D
