Well, just saw the "best outboard ever" post. I thought I'd piggy-back this question. when I was a kid, we had a 40 hp johnson. Ran fine . about 28 - 30 mph. Our friends had a Scott (not sure which era .. scott/atwater, scott/McCulloch, etc.) To my young eyes in the mid 60's, that 75 Scott seemed the same size (though, I think it was a 3 cylinder)and they could fly by us. Yes? Was that a killer motor, or is my memory fuzzy?

Bet the Johnson is still running........I remember the big old 6 cylinder Merc, flying past us with that old green Johnson behind us, buy I bet the Merc is sitting in some graveyard long before the Johnny (but I STILL love those old good looking "Tower of Power" mercs.PS. Just got done ebaying the last of 2 1957 Scott-Atwaters....not a lot of lookers or takers.

McCulloch was getting 60 hp out of 63 cubes in 58 when Evinrude was getting 50 out of 70 cubes.75 hp out of 63 cubes in 61 And 45 out of 42 cubes in 63.I think ahead of most everyone at the time.
