I check the search but could not find an answear to this question. With internet explorer 7, how can you tell if a site is secure any more. With the old explorer, on the bottom task bar it would come up ssl 128 bit and a padlock on it but this new one doesn't have it. Any help with this would be appreciated. Tks in advance.

For your dancing and dining pleasure.....

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)Internet Explorer 7/Transport Layer Security (TLS) makes it easier to see whether Web transactions are secured by SSL or TLS. A security report icon now appears to the right of the address bar when you view a page using a Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTPS) connection. Clicking this icon displays a report describing the certificate used to encrypt the connection and the certifying authority that issued the certificate. The security report also provides links to more detailed information.

I thought the S after the http meant it was secure, and that was all the proof you really needed. Guess I was wrong! LOL

It's all pretty complicated but simply put it's something like this:

https:// means the data you submit from forms is encrypted. If someone intercepts what you submit it will appear as jibberish.

The second part is the certificate. This is what gives you a reasonable amount of certainty that the server is indeed who it says it is.

If you wanted to setup an E-Commerce site, you'd have to purchase a digital certificate from some place like Verisign. You have to submit a lot of proof to them that you are who you say you are. Then they'll make a digital certificate that you'll install into your web server.

If you really want to know how it works, do some googling / wikipedia on SSL, Secure Socket Layer, Digital Certificates, Verisign etc...
