How much water should be considered okay comming out of the water outlet before you determine to change the water pump impeller. This is a 71 evinrude 60hp.

skeffer
Most of the water goes out and down the internal exhaust housing. What you see "spurting" out the exhaust relief hole doesn't mean much. If you don't know when the water pump impeller was last changed, it is due for a change. Run the engine dry-out of the water-for 30 seconds and it will be due again. Good idea to change every 5 years or less. There are many variables salt/fresh, sandy/clear, 30 hours yr./ 300 hrs. yr., etc..
Change it and keep a record of service work.
Backfire ;)

Has the engine been stored for a time or run regularly? Do you know the last time the impeller was changed? With a '71, I would change it just to get a baseline for future changes. The impeller often looks good up until the time it fails.
