How do you remove recirculation check valves

I just got a rebuilt powerhead to replace my 1989 225 Johnson I was told that is a 1992. I started putting everything back together and found that 4 of the recirc valves are bad. They are the kind with the screen, how do they come out? Could I also use the ones off my 89 they are all good but are the style that looks like a hose barb.

The is a picture of the screen over the checkvalve does it just pry out or do you need a special tool.
