how do you find year and model

i have a pontoon that was given to me by my wifes uncle. so far all i can tell is that it is a johnson 40 hp and looks like it was last registered in 91. how do you find year and model of motor . saw an excellent link here for parts( oh yeah no key so i need a new ign. sw. ) but i need more info, i.e J40TLCEC... any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

well i was just using that for an example of info the parts web site wanted . im not sure where to look on the motor if theres a casting number or stamp or whatever. sorry for the confusion.
such as jlr40clc or tj40elcec or j40rcec . where would i find this located on the engine so i can order parts? thanks again for any help
