About how far above the bottom of the pan is the end of the DST ?

could I clamp a pump to the DST and suck the out oil?
If yes Approximately how much oil remains in pan? (ruffly)

Or do do I put a tube down the DST to get the oil out.

Thank you

It's close to the bottom but can't give you an exact distance. You can attach a pump to the top of the dipstick such as this one:

Par Oil Drain Pump - Jabsco 34060-0130 - iboats

(iBoats also has them cheaper)

Or you can pump it out with a tube such as this one:

Economy Oil Changer Pump - Jabsco 17850-1012 - iboats

There are many to choose from. You will always get out a little more with the kind that you put a hose down the dip stick. Either way remember to run the engine until up to operating temp to thin out the oil before draining and to vent the system by removing the oil fill cover while draining.

I have a 5 qt. system and find i usually get 3.5 to 4 qts. out each time.

You'll get nothing out if you just try to suck out the oil.The dip stick is only about an inch longer than you see at the block.
You'll need a hard plastic skinny tube to suck the oil.
Like Taz suggests get the motor warm.Trying to suck it out cold or in the winter months it's gonna be tough.
Just be carefull cause 180 degree oil can burn.
The filter gets hot too.
It drains back into the block,so it shouldn't have much oil in it.
It takes a while for it to drain back but by the time it takes to drain it will be cool enough to work on.
A heater in the bildge under the block will warm it up.
Gonna take a few hours to heat it up.

Not true. On my 5.7 I can get around 4.5 quarts or better out of it just putting the hose on the top of the dipstick tube. They are designed this way. Works great. Not sure how far off the bottom of the pan they are but it is definately longer than an inch.

The tube extends close to the bottom and you should get 95% of it out.Do the oil change on a warmed up engine.

I'm not sure all motors are the same...

We need to hear from someone who's seen it/tried it. JerryJerry05 may have.

Ensign, have you seen it/done it? AQ131, or similar motors? Or maybe you've got one yourself.;)

I agree, - Marine engines I would think have the extended tube, Auto based engines would not.

Like I said. His motor the tube only goes down 1 inch. See his pic...
Before you say someone is wrong???? You should at least look up a parts diagram.
There are as many variations as there are types of motors.
Older Volvos used the factory dipstick tubes on the 4 6 and 8 cyl. motors.
Later years they incorporated the OMC/Cobra oilpan tube. Research!!!!

In all those 20 years you've never worked on a Volvo 4 cyl.??? :)

The V-8 come with 2 different size tubes. One about an inch long insert the other with a longer insert.

Its not a car ..

Not like you can put a drain pan under the motor and change the oil. You also have to think about the fuel filter at the same time.

Most Techs suck it out of the dip stick tube After they changed the Lower unit lube.

Change out the lower unit ..then fire it up to winterize .. then replace the oil is what these guys do. Yes through the dip stick sucky thing.

I drain mine out through the drainplug. Cause I can reach, and it works on my boat.

Sorry, yes, into doubled up heavy duty garbage bags. Then pour the garbage bags into a container for disposal.

That works fine when you have a lot of room, but if things are tight, and you snag that bad on something on the way out, it's going to be a mess.

Correct.

I use two 3 mil contractor garbage bags since I've always got them on hand. First I put the bags open under the oil filter and change that out. then pull the drain plug. I don't have to warm the engine too much either, just enough to warm the oil a bit and suspend some of the sediment, if there is any. Once I missed the bag opening by accident, only once. Yes, it was a mess.

Thats good water test first Idea.

This pumping sucks I could barely get a gallon out.

If the bag works I'll be putting a valve on pan with a hose out the drain plug. ( ill pull the the bilge pump & switch if needed )

Thank you

Ayuh,... I built 1 of them for my motor when I did the refit,...
I used it,... it's Deathly S L O W.... Warm oil or cold, don't matter....
But,... hookin' a Pump on the end of it, Worked quite Nicely,...

I went out, 'n bought 1 of those big "pump it up, 'n walk away" oil suckers,... with all the adapter tubes,..
It's all I use now-a-days...
Moeller I think,...

Re: How deep is the dip stick tube

Point taken

But the fact is anything in better than sucking through the DST. If you cant see if the hose is on the bottom of the pan.

I used a vac Pump with a old air compressor tank.

Even Deathly slow would be better if it got it all out.
