Guys- I had this problem last year too but when I start the (5.7l) engine, I have to wait until it warms up to put it into reverse for 5 min or so or it dies. Not that big of deal on a slow day at the ramp but when it's busy....well.

I had the carb and choke adjusted by a good mechanic last year as the previous owner had obviosly played around with the carb. The idle adjustment mix screws were all screwed up and the choke was adjusted so bad that it wasn't even engaging. All of this was fixed and it ran really good last year. I just think that unless conditions are perfect (like brand new gas and high temps) it just doesnt have quite enough RPM's at cold idle to overcome the load at startup when engaing the gears. What can I do? The boat otherwise runs great when warm. carb is a Holly 4150 600cfm.

What engine/drive do you have? Have you verified the idle is correct in gear, in the water, per the FSM?

Edit: Saw that you have an inboard.

2006 Marine power 5.7l. It is at the lower end of the scale. 600 per the manual.

Ayuh,.... There's an idle adjustment screw at the carb's throttle arm, don't go over 750 rpms...

I thought about raising that too but will that make a difference when cold?

is the choke working properly? butterflies should be mostly cold once you pump the throttle before starting (cold start).

Now that u mention it, I'm pretty sure it was open when I started it in the driveway for de-winterization but I'm getting old so I'll just check to make sure it wasn't
