Help with 25hp 81 Evinrude. Leaking Oil

I have notice that I am leaking oil out of what looks like a vent hole in my lower unit. The hole is located near the top part of the lower unit. What is causing this?? Does it need to be rebuilt?? I am new to this but I am very mechanically inclined.. PLEASE HELP...

if the oil has a rank nasty smell it is lower unit oil, if not it is normal crud from exhaust. read this http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=207285
