fuel tank venting

I keep reading that we should make sure that the fuel tank is venting. I have a built-in 25 gallon tank in my 174 Striper. There is a fill port and a little black thing sticking out close to the filling door. As I am filling the tank with fuel, eventually some fuel will spill out of that black thingy (the vent?). How do I test the vent to make sure it is working?

Re: fuel tank venting

Make sure the vent line has a loop in it or is at least higher than the fuel tank to prevent water from getting in the line and eventually, the gas tank. Probably the cause of the spitting back when filling. There's always the option of removing the hose at the tank and blowing through it with compressed air to be sure it's clear, but I think you are all right.
