Fuel Problem

I took the boat out today and discovered I have some kind of fuel problem. The engine, a 1994 Evinrude 140 HP V4 (6cyl gearcase) started acting as though it was running out of fuel. The squeeze bulb (the one used for priming) was flat. That is to say it wasn't hard like it was full of fuel. I would squeeze it to fill it and the engine would run ok for a few minutes (2 or 3max). The engine is smoking a great deal at idle (mosquito fogger level smoke) and goes away when running at higher RPM.

Do I need to take this to a technician or is it something simple I can do, such as fuel filter, fuel pump etc :confused?

Re: Fuel Problem

I had exactly the same problem on a '75 Chrysler. Turned out to be a bad gasket on the gascolator bowl allowing the fuel pump to suck air into the system. Pumping the primer would refill the float bowls for a while, then the engine would die. Giving the bulb a squeeze every minute or so kept it going.

Re: Fuel Problem

Also, check to make sure the fuel tank vent is not obstructed or closed.
