Freezing cables

I use my 76 starcraft for mostly duck hunting in the winter, I have replaced my cables and have what I believe to be, enough of a loop as not bind the cable, however when it is super cold the boat won't go in gear. I usually end up removing the cable from the motor putting in gear at he motor and using the throttle bar on the control box to get where i gotta go. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Re: Freezing cables

That is clearly not normal. Cables should work in below-freezing weather. It sounds like you have water/moisture in them. Some of the control cables have removeable ends. If you can remove one end, you can pull out the inner wire and clean up and re-oil the casing. Perhaps just oil would work. You could try some alcohol to drive out the moisture in the cable sheath, and then re-oil.

Look for a square brass insert in the plastic cable end. If you find one, it should unscrew and allow the inner SS cable to pull out.
