Pulled the cruiser, power washed hull and started taking thing off for the repower. Plan is to remove Engine, drive and transom assembly. Plan to use Marine Kinetics (Bob Madara) out of NY for heads and custom cam work. MK wants to use ported and polished aluminum heads, roller rockers and roller cam with cam to produce 600HP. I haven't fully decided but with the cast heads and cam I can get 500HP. MK suggest the Bravo 1 XR but I would really like to stick with the B3 for docking and slow moving.

Inside of the plenum has a bit of oil in it and a strong smell of gas.

The exhaust has black soot build up. The engine has always run rich and this is one of the reasons I've decided I going though everything this time.

Looks like fun AD. I'll be tagging along to see all of the good work. You know, you could always upgrade to a twin engine boat to get the 600 hp :)

Wouldn't mind twins but gee-wiz that would be some major coin. Someone on OSO mentioned the same thing but while it would be cheaper to put twins in (edit) then buy another boat, it would be way more then I'm willing to spend. Plus all the added weight may need to get it up to 700 total.

Always glad to see you along for the trip, appreciate the input a lot.

If you are going to stay with the stock fuel rail, be sure to do some searching about the restricted fuel rail injector hole number 7.

Fuel rail hole # 7 may need to be bored out some for better fuel flow to cylinder # 7 to avoid cylinder overheat/damage.

Thanks much, that is a very good read, will re-read again later. My current plan is to replace the Merc MPI-1 system with a Holley or FAST EFI. I;m leaning toward the Holley but wouldn't mind sticking with Merc if it is cost effective. Every systems has issues just trying to get the best one for the effort

Waiting for a friend to show up Saturday to help me pull the engine. While looking around I've read a lot of info on the 540 engine. Found places online which sell new 540 crate motors just like when I bought the 502. Anyone know if a 540 will bolt up where the 502 was? Don't know if there are things that will or will not work from one to the other. Still want an engine which will run many hours without having to get into it every so many hours

That's what I was thinking, glad to hear confirmation. thanks
Now to look further into the cost of a 540 (new Dart block) over rebuilding my 502

Is your old block not able to bore &/or stroke? Or are you just able and willing to go for the newer better stuff.

also look at the 572 if you are looking at the 540. a 572 crate long block is $10k from Blueprint engines. then you will need a new drive

My block can be bored and stroked but just don't want to not think about other ideas. When I look at what I;m going to spend if I go with aluminum heads, cam and other work and parts. Then compare it to a new Dart crate motor *which could be bored later) or other engines. Just want to look at everything before I get into full blown cash output

Will the 572 fit in where the 502 is now? I only have about 2 inches in front of the pulley. I do think 750HP is going over the top with my cruiser. Would like to have a good running engine which will not need head work every 300 hours, and run on no more then 90 octane. Looking at the 540 with a mild setup with no more then 500HP, actually think 500 would work. The build for the 502 is in the same range for what MK is advising in the 600 mark.

Found a very good thread which HT32BSX115 (Rick) brought up some good points on maximum rpm a B3 should spin. He mentions that Merc designs the B3 to spin in the 2300 to 2500 max rpm range. So if I go from a 2.0 to a 1.81 my rpm at 5200 engine speed will increase to 2872rpm. Reason for possible changing of drive ratio is with increase HP I would like it if I didn't have to buy new props. Having 20, 22, 22 cupped and 24 pitch prop sets currently

502, 540, and 572 are dimensionally identical in length. the 572 is a tall deck block so your heads are just a tad wider. Building the 572 at 625hp will run there all day long as long as long as you keep fuel in it. your not pushing 1650hp thru the block like the Merc Racing 1650.

then again, you can get 600-625 from your current 502 block and be reliable

We pulled the engine and started disassembly. Everything is looking good but do have a couple shinny spots on a couple pistons, maybe a bit of water go in. Took some pics but they didn't come out. Will take some more and post later.

Talked to Eddie Young today at length and he advised that (paraphrasing) if I had a go fast then I should go for the Holley EFI. Since I need torque more then HP he recommends I need to keep the intake I have and have it worked. The intale I currently have will produce a lot more torque then the single plan intake at low er rpms/ Change from a EMFI-1 to a EMFI-4 and do some mods to the fuel rail, pump and intake. Suggest to stay with the B3XR. After about an hour of discussing what I would like and what he recommends I thought I should not have taken the engine apart. So current plan is to strap everything to a pallet and send it to Eddie and let him work his magic. Current plan is to build the motor for between 525 to 575HP and 600 ft lb torque.

Should have just left the motor together and let him take it apart. So now I have to box it up. Sure looking forward to it coming back an d next season

Drove to YP today and dropped off the engine. You know it takes up a lot more room when you take it all apart :rolleyes: Now time to get started getting the boat ready for when the engine comes back
