Forgot to put in forward cant reset it. What am I doing wrong

hello,
1985 75hp mercury

I had to replace my impeller but before I took the bottom off I forgot to put it in drive.

So now from what I understand. I push the lever all the way forward on the control?

Then I turn the actual drive cw until it locks the propeller at which point it can not spin ccw but only cw?

Thats what I did and it still wont go in

please help!

You can do that, however a much better way is to put the gearcase and control into neutral. In neutral the prop will spin either way easily. You need to mate the splines on the driveshaft and the shiftshaft. To mate the driveshaft, turn the flywheel with your hand until the driveshaft mates and the gearcase slides up. Now use a needle nose plier to line up the upper and lower shift shaft and rock the throttle handle a bit to mate them.
