force water pump seal

I am putting a new impeller in a 1988 force,the seal on top of the water pump housing does not have a spring in it.Is it suppost to? Shop manual doesn't say.If so where can I find just the seal with out buying the whole housing? Any help will be appriciated <br /> Thanks,<br /> Troy
