The foam rubber insulation inside my engine cover of my 1972 Johnson 85 is very old and flakes off whenever it is touched. This stuff can't be good for the carbs.

I'd like to replace the foam rubber with some new stuff. Can I use normal foam rubber or is the stuff in the cover special? I am worried about heat.

Thanks,
Gary

Just tear the stuff out of there, and washdown any errant debris. Maybe if you happen to run across a replacement in the future you can replace it. (the hood or foam)

Ditto.

Also good point about the heat. The powerhead will run a bit cooler without foam in the hood but its a small amount.

Good luck!
