Evinrude starting problem

I have a 1973 40 hp Evinrude with electric start that used to work fine, but no longer wants to start except with the pull start. Have replaced the solenoid and the ignition switch. Wires and connections are in good working order. If I bypass the solenoid with jumper cable from (+) on battery to starter, it will engage and start. What could this be? Thanks.

Could be a blown fuse in the holder right by the solenoid which will keep the starter from working. Good luck

Have you got voltage from the ignition switch to one of the small posts on the solenoid when you turn the switch to start?
If so ground the other small post to ground with a jumper wire and see if it starts, if so you have a problem with the ground circut, maybe a safty switch.

Thanks for the info! Found there was a plastic switch on the starboard side that had been 'tripped'. Reset, and it fired right up. Thanks!
